Stowe, Vermont’s Ron Philo Qualifies to Play in the 38th US Senior Open
Stowe, VT. (May 26, 2017) —The Lodge, A Destination Hotel is proud to announce that on Wednesday, May 10, Stowe Mountain Club Golf Director Ron Philo qualified for the 38th US Senior Open. Philo earned his place in the championship with a score of 69 at the Kernwood Country Club and is currently the only Vermonter to qualify. The United States Golf Association (USGA) received over 2,600 entries to play in the Senior Open proving Philo’s enormous accomplishment.
The U.S. Senior Open is accessible to professional golfers and amateurs with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.4, who are at least 50 years of age at the start of championship play. Having recently turned 50, Philo is a newcomer to the sport’s senior category, but is no stranger to competitive golf. An accomplished player and coach, he captured the 2006 PGA Professional National Championship, is a five-time PGA Section Player of the Year and four-time PGA Section champion. He has competed in eight major championships overall, including one U.S. Open, and more than a dozen events on the PGA Tour. Philo is the Director of Golf & Club Operations for Stowe Mountain Club in Stowe, VT.
“I’m excited to represent Stowe, Vermont and all my colleagues in the PGA at the Salem Country Club,” said Philo. “I’d better find some time to play between now and the tournament to make sure I stand a fighting chance on the course.”
The 38th US Senior Open will take place June 29th – July 2nd at Salem Country Club in Salem, MA.
The U.S. Senior Open is one of the five major championships in senior golf, introduced 37 years ago in 1980. It is administered by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and is recognized as a major championship by both the PGA Tour Champions and the European Seniors Tour. The event is open to amateurs, but has been dominated by professionals. It has been played on many different courses throughout the United States.
Sectional qualifying will be played over 18 holes at 34 sites across the United States between May 15 and June 12. There are qualifying sites in 27 states, including five in California and three in Florida. In addition, places in the 156-player field are reserved for eligible winners of official PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions events in the weeks remaining before the 2017 U.S. Senior Open. The USGA accepted entries from golfers in 48 states, including 81 from Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia, as well as 25 foreign countries.
